Search Begins to Know Cause of Deadly Mine Explosion

Those of us who live in this area have coal miners in our families or we know someone who does. The personal injury attorneys and legal staff at Hewitt & Salvatore, PLLC send our condolences to the families and friends of those who lost loved ones that fateful day last week.

At the time of this writing, 29 miners have been found dead, and now the focus of the investigation is going to what caused this horrific event. It could take longer than a year to fully understand what caused the explosion. All electrical equipment in the mine—such as cables and power-generation systems—will be tested by manufacturers and independent labs to see if they were functioning properly or if any might have caused a spark that ignited methane gas underground.

It may be discovered that Massey Energy, the owner of the Upper Big Branch mine where the explosion occurred, is responsible for the deaths of these miners. Massey has been known for disregarding the safety of its miners in the past, and just last year was fined $900,000 for over five hundred violations. Since the start of 2010, Massey has already received 400 safety violations! This company must be held accountable for its action and its negligence. These deaths could have been prevented.
